Alex Meyer - W6ZX & WB6AFJ (Always Finding Junk) - 23 September, 2005
A telephone call from Bob, W6RGG, ARRL Pacific Division Director informs me that Alex Meyer, W6ZX is SK. I recently forwarded what was probably the last Email message sent by Alex. It was informing everybody that he had “blood cancer.” Later W6KM confirmed that Alex had Leukemia, and was near death.
I suppose that many of you did not know Alex. To refresh the memory of some: Alex formerly held the call WB6AFJ. He was known quite well as “Always Finding Junk,” the phonetics that he used for that call. “Always Finding Junk” was a fitting handle for Alex. In his younger days Alex was a buyer and seller of ham parts and equipment at flea markets and elsewhere.
I remember Alex from the hey-day period of WB6OQS when Alex and I and K6DKG (Kay Six Dee Kay and a Gee) would get together after meetings at the Dennys on North First Street to discuss club and ham radio happenings. K6DKG kept us separated for Alex was as opinionated as I am. DKG has been SK for several years.
Alex also worked with the Silicon Valley VE Group giving license examinations at Tandem Computers (now HP) in Cupertino. We missed him when he moved on to other activities.
Alex also was listed high in countries on DXCC, and he was a member of the DX club.
Alex’s daughter, Gerda Valuzenela (408-258-1128) is attempting to make a history of the ham radio accomplishments of Alex. She would appreciate a call from anyone wishing to contribute bits of his history.
